All web sites on the internet are stored on computers called web servers. Hosting refers to the service provided by those servers. They store and provide access to your web site. These servers essentially put your web site on the internet.
Think of hosting as a bulletin board. You can pay to have an advertisement put up. The bulletin board will keep your ad on it and it will display it to anybody who goes to have a look.
